Accompanying video: Troubleshooting Algae
There is so much to look forward to in the summer months of the year: spending time outside, plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and… increased algae growth? While it might not be the first thing you think of as a seasonal occurrence, the buildup of algae is something to keep an eye on in condensate management.
Temperatures rising into the 80s and 90s provide fertile growing conditions for algae. Its growth is the number one root cause of obstruction to the free flow of clean condensate for all gravity oil-water separators. Not to worry, there is a simple resolution to this phenomenon that will keep your Clean Resources oil-water separator operating as the most effective active molecular filtration system on the market!
When there is downtime in a compressed air system, water condensate will pool and remain stagnant. As the weather heats up during the summer months, this could lead to algae growth in the discharge line, which will restrict the flow of clean condensate out of the hose. The algae, usually accumulating at the end of the discharge line, will be thick and white in color – similar in appearance to Elmer's glue.
The solution to this complication is a quite simple one. Just disconnect the discharge hose from your oil-water separator and place a 5-gallon bucket underneath the system to allow any discharge to drip into the bucket. With the outlet hose now detached from the system, it is easy to blow compressed air through the line. This will break up any algae buildup on the inside of the hose and clear out the passage.
To prevent algae from even popping up in the first place, maintenance on your Clean Resources oil-water separator is very hassle-free. Pour around a cup of bleach directly through the vent at the top of the system a few times per year to sanitize and kill off any algae that may be building up inside the system. This simple step takes mere minutes to complete and is a fantastic way to keep your system running smoothly.
Clean Resources is committed to making sure that your company can effectively manage air compressor condensate. Following the steps outlined in this guide will help you keep the algae away and your oil-water separator running at peak performance.
